Social distancing is driving a lot of people stir crazy, myself included. This feeling is new to me because I’m used to spending a ton of time at home. However, knowing that I don’t have a choice is getting to me.
So, I created a list of things that I need to do before my social distancing ban is over! I’m currently on Spring Break, but starting next week, our district is transitioning to e-learning for three weeks.
I’ve always wanted to work from home and now I have my chance. I can tell it’s going to be a struggle at first, but with this bucket list, I won’t go crazy. I’ll always have something to do.
The Stir Crazy Bucket List

The challenge is to complete all of the reading tasks before your quarantine is over. If your quarantine is for a week, it’ll be more difficult to complete the tasks compared to someone who is quarantined for a month. You can double up if you need to.
I tried to theme these challenges as a way to honor the self-care suggestions I’ve been seeing on social media.
- Stay social, while distancing. Call a friend or family member. Ask them to pick a number and then go to your bookshelf. Count from left to right until you’ve reached the chosen number. This is your next read.
- Participate in some spring cleaning. Use this time to dust off the book that’s been on your TBR the longest. Read this book and ignore the rest of your spring cleaning. You cleaned a dusty book that deserves some love. Self-five!
- Travel virtually. There’s a bunch of places that are offering virtual travel and field trips for free right now. Pick a book set in a place that you’ve always wanted to go. Fictional places count: off to Hogwarts!
- Experiment with food. Choose a book that’s circulated around food and try out one of the recipes… if you have the ingredients. If not, try to improvise with what you have!
- Get crafty! You can pick any book you want to read for this one, but once you’re done reading it… make something inspired by it. Anything counts, really: bookmarks, fanfiction, drawings… anything you can think of.
Bonus Reading Challenge: Write a letter to your favorite author.
I am also a creative writer, so I had to create a section for my writer friends out there. This isn’t really a challenge, per se, but if you want it to be… go for it!
- Become a Dust Warrior. Sign up for 4thewords. It’s an RPG game (nerd alert) for writers. You use your word count goals to progress in a story line and defeat monsters. I’m still new, but I’m hooked. There’s a 30 day free trial and after that it’s like $4 a month. Super worth it. Here’s my referral code: UCEOT91594.
- Write an Odd Short Story. Go to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary and find their “Word of the Day” box. Write a short story with that word as your title.
- Participate in Contests. Reedsy has weekly writing contests: participate in those. Each week you’re in quarantine, write a short story based off of their prompt. You could win $50 bucks out of it.
- Write a short story in a genre you hate. We all have those genres that are outside of our comfort zone. Write one in a genre that’s not normally your cup of tea.
- Write outside. Take your cup of coffee and your computer outside and look at your surroundings. Let your little slice of the world inspire your next story.
Bonus: Try to publish a short story you write in quarantine.
Just Because We’re Nerds
This section is just because readers and writers tend to be weird. I know I’m weird and I embrace my awkwardness. These are just awkward things to do, but you can do them in the comfort of your own home. Celebrate being stuck at home and laugh while doing it.
- Record a video of yourself announcing the day of social distancing, making it seem like a clip from Cloverfield. For example, “It’s Day 5 of social distancing. We’re officially out of toilet paper and I found a shiny Pokemon.” Bonus points if you’re hiding somewhere in your house whispering into the camera.
- Living Room Party. If you’re quarantining with other people, they may want to join in. Turn up music, maybe break out some alcohol, and have a party in your living room with the people you live with.
- Themed Movie Marathon. Dress up, talk in accents, do the full nine-yards to your favorite movies. Of course, make do with what you have around your house. Putting a dish rag over your face and calling yourself a dementor counts! – We’ll be doing a Harry Potter one for sure.
- Have a game night. Board games, video games, card games, weird games you make up… sky’s the limit! I enjoy playing Mario Kart or Rock Band with shots involved. Just saying. You can sweeten the pot by making it a competition: whoever wins the most games before everyone passes out wins the golden spoon or something.
- Try a YouTube tutorial. Of anything. Any tutorial that you have the materials for. Makeup tutorials or drawing tutorials… just something that could be fun and entertaining. Bonus points if it’s something you’re notoriously bad at.
Bonus: Include someone else in your antics via Facetime or Facebook Messenger, maybe someone who lives alone.
